Brooklyn, Ohio’s Veterans Memorial Park, located just behind City Hall, is one of the city’s largest recreational sites. Flowing through the park is Stickney Creek. When stormwater from surrounding development began eroding the creek to the point at which gabion baskets along its banks began collapsing, the City recognized the need for a resilient solution. The West Creek Conservancy selected Biohabitats to design and construct a nature-based restoration to stabilize the creek and enhance its habitat, ecological function, and recreation opportunities.
The restoration regenerated more than 1,500 linear feet of the natural stream system, including 6 acres of associated floodplain. The restoration design, which features boulder toe, toe wood and buried soil riprap protection and soil lifts with live branch layering, also involves improving and relocating streamside trails and enhancing viewsheds. Biohabitats was the prime contractor for this design-build effort, with Meadville Land Service acting as prime subcontractor leading construction implementation. The restored Stickney Creek corridor enhances floodplain riparian functions and habitat while creating abundant opportunities for public outreach and education.
